Quality wooden serving boards and platters are a great addition to any kitchen.
At Just Slate, we have a superb range of oak and sycamore boards sourced from sustainable sources in Scotland’s Kingdom of Fife. Not only are they environmentally conscious, they look fantastic, and if taken care of properly they can last a very long time.
Oil will keep your board looking great
The secret to long life is oiling. Using an oil-based product regularly will help keep the moisture out of your board and the liquids from the foods they come into contact with. If you use your board daily or several times weekly, oiling should be done monthly. There are a number of oils you can use to get the job done.
Linseed (flax seed) and walnut oils
These have been used for hundreds of years for this purpose. Linseed and walnut are natural oils that create a durable wood finish and act like a natural varnish.
This is a 100% neutral petroleum by-product and is completely food-safe. While it provides identical resistive and protective and traits of other oils, mineral oil differs in that it never really dries and may offer a longer period between re-applications. This oil is clear in colour, odourless and has a smoother finish (not too greasy).
Other popular and food-safe finishing options are wax-based salves. These are usually a combination of oils and waxes blended to make application of the product easier. Wax is a determined substance, it never completely dries and is able to cover and resist almost any liquid. It is important to say, once you go wax, there’s no going back. Well, almost. It is a very tricky substance to remove but offers incredible protection.
To oil your board, apply a thin layer to the entire dry and clean board. With any oiling process, it is important to leave your board overnight to guarantee optimum protection. After your board has fully absorbed the protective coating, wipe down with a damp cloth and your board is ready to use.
Daily care is key
Now that you have mastered the art of oiling, your Scottish Made board will be very easy to clean after each use. Simply wipe down with a damp cloth or sponge, removing all traces of food debris and spills. It is very important never immerse your board underwater, and under no circumstances put them in the dishwasher. This natural wooden product will act like a sponge if immersed leading to warping and cracking during the drying out process - soaking is definitely to be avoided!
Now that you have the all important care information, it is time to go and find the right board or platter to compliment your kitchen. View the entire Scottish Made range of oak and sycamore boards and platter on the Just Slate website
